Skelly and Loy has served as one of two statewide consultants for TU's Abandoned Mine Drainage (AMD) Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) Program since 2010, completing seven projects to date for TAG-funded efforts benefitting watershed groups and county conservation districts. Specific AMD consultation provided by Skelly and Loy's experts have included development of operations, maintenance, and replacement plans for five passive treatment systems and three limestone sand dosing sites in the Shoup Run watershed; multiple conceptual remediation system design options for a highly intermittent and moderately contaminated source to Coal Run and for a high flow, net alkaline, iron-laden discharge to Carbon Run, both sub-watersheds to the Shamokin Creek; and a characterization study of AMD sources to the Hans Yost Creek Watershed. In addition to analysis and design of new AMD remediation systems, Skelly and Loy also evaluates existing treatment system for potential performance improvements and provides construction supervision for treatment systems throughout Pennsylvania under this contract.
