Geomorphology

At Skelly and Loy, we have long recognized the benefit of using geomorphological studies at every phase of archaeological research. Geomorphological studies are used to determine the composition of project area soil strata and indicate the potential for intact soils/sediments of appropriate age to contain archaeological deposits. The participation of the geomorphologist during early-stage reconnaissance and predictive modeling can determine the potential for intact archaeological deposits within different project alternatives. During a Phase I survey, the geomorphologist can document disturbance and determine the appropriate methods for survey including the location, number, and type of archaeological excavations (if any) best suited to the project. Finally, detailed geomorphological studies during Phase II testing and Phase III excavations complement the horizontal and vertical artifact and feature distributional data in interpreting site formation processes. The results of geomorphological assessments enable us to concentrate field activities in areas which are likely to produce positive results and eliminate needless testing in unsuitable areas, making our research designs more efficient and cost-effective.
