Karst Geology Assessments

Skelly and Loy routinely conducts studies to assess the development of karst geologic features for proposed land development projects. Typical investigations include a review of topographic and geologic maps, aerial photographs, and fracture traces to identify karst features. On-site inspections may be conducted to field-check the location of the suspected karst structures. More detailed investigations have included the use of geophysical survey instrumentation to identify voids in the subsurface. Our staff of Professional Geologists is experienced in providing cost-effective recommendations for mitigating karst-related impacts.

Skelly and Loy has also conducted numerous hydrogeologic investigations to evaluate karst aquifers for developing industrial groundwater resources and drinking water supplies. These studies included performing fracture trace studies to select favorable well drilling sites, overseeing the installation of wells, conducting short- and long-term aquifer tests, collecting and analyzing pumping test data, and developing reports for complying with state, interstate, and federal regulations.

In addition, Skelly and Loy has performed numerous investigations to evaluate potential relationships between groundwater pumping/dewatering operations and the development of sinkholes in karst settings. These investigations have included evaluating the volume of groundwater being extracted, timing of the pumping operations, determining aquifer hydraulic properties, evaluating regional geologic structures, assessing the effects on nearby surface water bodies, developing computer groundwater models to simulate groundwater flow, and formulating groundwater management plans to mitigate sinkhole development.
